Strawberries and baking soda… Are we making strawberry shortcake? Strawberry cheesecake? Some other kind of baked cake? No, we are not, although they all sound good. Allegedly we are using these two mixed together to clean our teeth! Yes, you read that right. Strawberries and baking soda to clean our teeth. We’ve heard of many at-home teeth whitening remedies, and one of those apparently includes crushed strawberries and baking soda.
It sounds a bit weird, I know, but there are many people who swear by this method of at-home teeth cleaning, and here’s why. All you need is a cup of crushed strawberries and baking soda
. You mix that cup or so with baking soda to create your teeth whitening agent.
Rumor has it, these two mixed together work similarly to toothpaste. The method suggests that you first brush gently with the strawberries and baking soda mixture so that you don’t irritate your gums; followed by another round of brushing with your everyday fluoride toothpaste.
Alas, all good, seemingly too-good-to-be-true things must come to an end. Experts have chimed in and strawberries and baking soda
mixed together as teeth whitener is ineffective, and can be harmful. The seeds in the strawberries can easily, as many have experienced while eating them, get suck in between your teeth, which is not good as it can cause quite the trouble for your gums!
Experts recommend that you steer clear of this at-home remedy as it's proven to be ineffective and possibly dangerous for your teeth. These same experts suggest that you just drop the $20-$25 on scientifically backed up teeth whitening products, such as toothpastes or strips. White strips, especially, have been proven to be not only safe for your teeth and gums, but also very effective! Sorry strawberries and baking soda, you get a no-pass… Nice try though!
