Pregnancy and Oral Health

Expecting a bundle of joy means you are getting ready to experience some big changes in your life and in your body for the next nine months (sometimes longer!).  But pregnancy and your oral health go hand in hand.  Neglecting your oral health can not happen or be put on the back burner because you are overwhelmed with everyone else.  Hormonal changes in the body will increase your risk of having oral issues like gum disease or pregnancy tumors on the gums.

While you wait for that cute bundle of joy to bless your life, here are some things you should be aware of to keep your mouth as healthy as possible!

Pregnancy Gingivitis

Your body needs hormones, especially to make a baby.  It is impossible without them.  But these added hormones can wreak havoc on your body.  Moods start swinging, your bladder seems smaller than before, and those cravings for weird things kick in!  But hormones also can affect your mouth……and can cause your gums to swell during pregnancy.  This can lead to a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis.  If your gums start to bleed more frequently during pregnancy, stay proactive about it.  Speak to your dentist and he might recommend during the pregnancy that your teeth are cleaned more frequently.  Oral Health Linwood NJ 08221

When you are at home, make sure you are using a soft-bristled toothbrush—this will help the gums be less irritated.  Also invest in a good toothpaste that is proven to help protect against gum disease and tooth decay.  Floss at least once a day.  With swelling, it will make bits of food get stuck in the teeth more easily.

Pregnancy Tumors

Don’t get to scared!  Hormonal changes develop when a women is pregnant, and pregnancy tumors can happen, but they aren’t malignant.  The American Dental Association agrees that the growths appear most often during the second trimester, and can look like raspberries that form between the teeth.  Your dentist can remove them, especially if they bother you.  In most cases, the tumors will disappear after the baby is born. Oral Health Linwood NJ 08221
