Swollen Gums with Orthodontic Appliances
There are a number of things that cause swollen gums and having swollen gums along with braces can be painful.
If you are an adult, it can be easily to figure out if hormones are the cause to the gums being swollen. For pregnant women, however, hormones surge and can increase the chances of gingivitis. The American Dental Association suggests that when the hormones shift, it can lead to pregnancy gingivitis, which is inflammation and tenderness in the gums. Because of this, having braces put on during this time, are not recommended. If a person is pregnant while already having braces, they should schedule appointments with their orthodontist is there are any signs of gum swelling. This same applies to girls who are undergoing puberty. Hormones can be the culprit of the gums swelling. New Jersey Top Dentist 08221 Linwood
Whatever the reason, it is always a good idea to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist to refresh and review brushing techniques and oral care that can help relieve swelling. Make sure to discuss whether gingivitis is the result of pregnancy, hormones, or plaque build up.
Braces Can Irritate
Another reason why the gums can swell with braces is a term called “gingival enlargement”. This is also known as hypertrophy or hyperplasia and occurs when there is an overgrowth or increase in gum cells. Most of the time, the result of this is hereditary or a medical condition. It is possible for the gums to become irritated and then react to the braces. Make sure to talk to your dentist or orthodontist. New Jersey Top Dentist 08221 Linwood
