If a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate, it takes a team of doctors and specialists to correct the issue. Finding a team may seem like daunting task, but there is help!
The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) and the Cleft Palate Foundation (CPF) both have websites that maintain a listing of teams. It is organized by states, and you can find help all throughout the United States. The teams listed have all met a certain standard for team care and you can even find international teams on their websites.
A common question that parents have is how will a cleft palate affect feeding the baby. When it comes to feeding, if the infant only has a cleft lip, it is likely that he or she will still be able to breastfeed or use a typical bottle. If a child is born with a cleft palate, usually a special bottle and nipple is needed and also a cleft palate feeding specialist will be around to guide you. Members of the team, speech-language pathologists, will be around to ensure adequate feeding and growth. Lactation specialists can also be consulted to help monitor feedings and growth. Your team of doctors can help you choose the best bottle for your child. Linwood #bestdentist NJ 08221
You will notice on the team, there is a doctor to help with language and speech. Usually when a child only has a cleft lip, the speech development is very typical (or close) to that of a normal child’s speech pattern. If a cleft lip and palate or only cleft palate is present, speech intervention is usually needed to help monitor the speech development and assist in treating any speech delays or errors that might develop. Speech therapy is often required and sometimes even further surgery. All these decisions can be guided by your child’s cleft palate craniofacial team. Linwood #bestdentist NJ 08221
