Babies and Kids......And their Teeth
The Best thing you can do for your child is start them off in the right direction! Teaching them how to care for their teeth can protect them for decades to come! Babies are born with their 20 primary teeth present in their jaws. Then the baby teeth starting poking through the gums at around 6 months of age. Those teeth help set the stage for future smiles by keeping the spacing just right in the jaw for their adult teeth.
The American Dental Association's recommendation is that parents should take their children to the dentist around their 1st birthday! Not only is it good to get those baby teeth checked that have started poking through, but also to familiarize them with the Dentist. Below you will find some tips that you can start at home to create healthy habits!
*Once your baby is born, occasionally clean his or her mouth by wiping the gums with a clean, moist washcloth. As soon as those baby teeth appear, decay can start to happen. Most baby's front four teeth usually push through the gums at around 6 months of age, although this is not always the case. Some children do not receive their first tooth until 12 or 14 months.
*Most children can not properly brush their teeth until 7 or 8 years of age. But that doesn't mean you don't let them try. Make you they are brushing their teeth twice a day. Get them involved! Have them brush once by themselves, then have an adult brush quickly behind them once. You wont need much toothpaste, just a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. The toothbrush should be child-size. And once they get 2 teeth that are side by side, let the flossing begin! How to Care For Your Child's Teeth Linwood NJ 08221
*As stated above, always teach your children to brush their teeth twice a day! But most Dentist recommend that night time is the most important time. So if you forget the morning, always make sure to get that night time brush in. Supervise children's brushing and always remind them not to swallow the toothpaste.
