Bleeding Gums During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a joyous time, and one you will always remember!  But often times, pregnancy brings on symptoms you never thought you would ever experience!  Heart burn……swelling…..mood swings……and bleeding gums!

It might come as a shock one day to look down after brushing or flossing to discover a red toothbrush or floss.  But this is extremely common during pregnancy.  Worrying about this is something you shouldn’t do, especially if you are taking care of your oral health the right way.  If you experience bleeding gums, make sure you are taking all the proper steps to control it, to put your mind and ease!

When the gums bleed, it is a sign of gingivitis.  When it only happens when you are pregnant, this is known as Pregnancy Gingivitis.  Hormones can make your body do crazy things, and these pregnancy hormones can make your gums more inflamed.  The inflammation can make you more prone to bacteria and plaque.  Having pregnancy gingivitis can make your gums tender and swollen while you are pregnant, which is what causes the bleeding when you brush and floss.  Gums Swollen During Pregnancy Linwood NJ 08221

Gingivitis during pregnancy is just a mild form of gum disease….but it can progress to periodontitis.  Periodontitis can increase you and your babies risk of premature birth, low birth weight, or even preeclampsia.  Making sure you maintain proper oral care before, during, and even after your pregnancy will help prevent these issues from arising and also keep you and your baby as healthy as possible!

The best thing you can do as a mom to be is make sure you are taking care of yourself.  If you are using a hard bristle toothbrush, switch to a soft-bristled and brush gently.  Brush twice a day, morning and evening.  Make sure to brush gently, if you brush to hard it can make the area even more inflamed.  Find a toothpaste that contains fluoride, this will help the teeth stay stronger.  Don’t skip out on flossing either!  Floss at least once a day.  Gums Swollen During Pregnancy Linwood NJ 08221
