Dealing with Plaque
Bacteria seems to be everywhere, and there are all sorts of different types of bacteria. There is bacteria that lives in your mouth, and it’s in the form of plaque. This type of bacteria causes cavities and gingivitis—and the only way to battle it is with practicing good oral hygiene every single day.
Plaque is a sticky substance, and it contains bacteria, and it accumulates on the teeth---in places your toothbrush and floss can reach, and in places that they can’t. Foods we eat every day cause this bacteria to produce acid. The obvious foods would be sugary foods…..but you may not realize that even starches like bread, crackers, and cereal, also cause acid to form in the mouth.
Plaque not only sticks to the teeth, but it also irritates the gums. When the gums become irritated, they get red, sensitive, swollen, and can even bleed. All of this leads to gum disease. With gum disease, the gums will start to pull away from the teeth and form little pockets. These pockets begin to fill up with bacteria and pus. If the gums do not get treated for this, the bone around the teeth will be destroyed causing the teeth to become loose or have to be removed. Find A Dentist Close By Linwood NJ 08221
So how do you get rid of plaque? The best way is by brushing and flossing every single day. When you brush, it will remove the plaque from the tooth’s surface. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You want the toothbrush to fit into your mouth comfortably, and the handle to fit in your hand comfortably. The toothbrush needs to be able to reach all areas in the mouth. Make sure you are using a toothpaste that contains fluoride—this will protect the teeth from decay. Flossing is also something that is extremely important. The toothbrush takes care of the surface of the teeth, but flossing takes care of in between the teeth, where the toothbrush can not reach.
