Dentures & Eating

Having teeth is something we usually don’t have to “adjust” to, but dentures……that is a whole new world in adjustment.  Eating with dentures will eventually become a normal thing, along with a normal diet, with just a couple of exceptions.  Dentures will never be the same as natural teeth, but your mouth and tongue will become accustomed to the dentures.

Some foods and may not taste the same and your mouth will become less sensitive to hard food.  This will put your dentures at risk for breaking.  Adding more seasoning to your meals can help, and make sure not to eat or drink things that are too hot.

  1.  Take it slow.  It is different eating with dentures versus eating with natural teeth.  So take it easy in the beginning until you adjust.  Try soft foods and cut them into small bite-sized pieces.  Cutting foods into thin strips also helps, and use both sides of your mouth to chew.
  2. Bite with Care.  You should not bite at the front of your mouth when your dentures are in.  This will cause the dentures to become unstable, therefore making your gums sore when the dentures move around.  If you do bite down using the front, use your canines.   Eating with Dentures Linwood NJ 08221
  3. Confidence with Dentures.  Eat will take a few days and weeks to be comfortable eating a meal with dentures.  After you feel like you have an easy time with soft foods, start introducing firmer foods into your diet.  Avoid gum, hot foods that contain shells, and food that has sharp bones.  It is important to remember again, to keep even pressure in your mouth by chewing your food with both sides of your mouth, at the same time.
  4. Think about the Long Term.  It will take time, but you will be able to eat the same diet you once at with natural teeth.  Eat your normal range of food, but make sure the food is correctly prepared, especially if it is hard or sticky by nature.  If you are really worried about it, you may choose to avoid nuts and seeds, too.  They can slip under dentures and also irritate your mouth.   Eating with Dentures Linwood NJ 08221
