Causes of Sore or Bumpy Tongue
At one time or another, we have all had a sore tongue. A lot of times it's nothing and goes away within a couple of days, however, sometimes it may be a larger issue. That is why it is important to visit the Dentist every 6 months for examination and dental hygiene. Your Dentist, as long as he/she is a good one, will always examine your tongue while also examining your teeth.
Trauma is one of the biggest culprits in making the tongue sore or cause painful bumps to form. Accidentally biting the tongue can leave a sore that takes at least a week to heal up. Scalding the tongue with something hot from the oven, or the coffee mug, can produce not only a sore tongue, but sometimes a blister on the tongue as well.
Are you a teeth grinder or jaw clencher? You wouldn't think this would cause a sore tongue, but it can. Grinding or clenching irritates the sides of the tongue and will cause it to become sore. Smoking or other tobacco products being used excessively can irritate the tongue so bad, it will become sore.
And what I feel is the most terrible, canker sores! Canker sores, also known as ulcers can develop on the tongue. What causes these ulcers is unknown, however, they can be worse during periods of stress or trauma.
Burning Tongue Syndrome can be found in some postmenopausal women. This syndrome can make the tongue feel like it has been burned.
Medical Conditions can also contribute to a sore tongue. Diabetes and anemia are the main conditions. Dental Work Linwood NJ 08221
Lastly, Oral Caner can be a factor to consider. Although most tongues that become sore are nothing to worry about, you should always contact a health professional (primary or dental) if a lump or sore appears on your tongue and it does not go away within a week or two. Oral Cancers don't always hurt in the early stage, so do not assume no pain mean nothing is wrong with the tongue. Dental Work Linwood NJ 08221
