Types of Dental Fillings

A Dental Filling is used to restore your tooth to its natural state, function and shape.  It also is necissary to prevent further decay of the tooth by eliminating an area where you might see bacteria growth flourish.  There are a number of factors to consider when choosing what type of filling is best.  Your dentist will do this upon examination of the tooth.  Many factors contribute to choosing the best type of filling; the extent of the repair, allergies to dental materials, where the filling will be located, and cost.

Probably the most recognizable filling is a Composite Filling.  This filling is made from a mixture of fine glass particles and plastic, and will be made to match the color of the tooth.  You will find this type of filling most often on front teeth or any visible part of the tooth.  This type of filling bonds directly to the tooth, which in turn reduces the need for excessive drilling.  It is also much strong than the next type of filling listed.

Amalgam Fillings is mostly used for filling in the back teeth.  This type of filling is very strong and can last at least 10 years, if not longer.  It however, is not made to match the tooth.  It is a mixture of metals, including mercury and silver.

The strongest of Dental Fillings is a Gold Filling.  It is extremely durable and will last longer than any other type.  However, it will not match the natural color of your teeth and is quite pricey.  It can range six to ten times more than the Amalgam Filling.

A Ceramic Filling is also natural looking.  It is made from porcelain.  It can break and tends to be more brittle, but what makes it appealing is it is more resistant to staining.  Again, this type of filling is more expensive......as much as a gold filling or more.

It is made from acrylic and a component of glass called fluoroaluminosilicate.  It is very strong and most often used in those whose teeth may have more decay.  It also extends below the gum.  You will also find this type of filling used for baby teeth.
