#CorrectingOverbites Effectively Correcting overbites is an important part of orthodontic care. The best solution for many overbite cases is the use of a dental appliance designed to encourage better jaw position. For younger patients who have small lower jaws, the Herbst appliance is an excellent therapeutic tool that helps in two ways. It encourages the lower jaw to move forward as it grows and also directs the growth of the upper jaw backwards. The Herbst appliance can also expand the upper jaw if this is necessary to produce a proper bite pattern.
The Herbst appliance features a linked tube and rod connecting the jaws that work rather like a shock absorber. While the appliance does restrict the side-to-side movement of the head to a small degree, important functions such as eating and talking are not affected. Designed for continual use at all times, the appliance is cemented securely to the patient's rear molars. Most patients wear the Herbst appliance for roughly 12 months; it is often used in combination with ordinary braces on the teeth in the front of the mouth. The appliance is usually replaced with side braces which are worn for another year to ensure proper alignment of the teeth. Best Cosmetic Dentist Linwood NJ, 08221
Patients who have recently had the Herbst appliance installed often experience tenderness in the cheeks, the teeth, and the jaw joints. These feelings typically pass within a week. (If tenderness persists for longer periods of time, the patient should consult with his or her dentist.) Salt water rinses are an effective way to mitigate the tenderness. While the appliance is still freshly installed, minor irritation on the insides of the cheeks is common. Patients are encouraged to sleep on their backs if possible in order to minimize the amount of pressure placed on the cheeks.
The arms of the Herbst appliance should be waxed as needed during the first week in order to remain comfortable. If the appliance's rod slips out of its tube accidentally it can be easily guided back into position by the patient. If all or part of the appliance comes loose from the teeth, the patient should visit his or her orthodontist as soon as possible to have it repaired so that treatment can continue.
